Cru Wine Bar

Thursday nights were always a big to-do. My friends and I would get dressed up and roll over to West Village for Cru’s Thursday night special of half price bottles of champagne and sparkling wines.

The atmosphere in Cru is relaxed but quite formal and the people sipping their glasses of wine are movers and shakers. The bartenders are always up for a quick chat as are the people perched at the bar.

Saunter over, sip a bottle of bubbly, and try some of their amazing cheeses … don’t forget to take your crew.

Pluckers Wing Bar

Pluckers claims that they are the official home of the freshman 15 … mine happened to be the senior 15 since I wasn’t 21 until then to partake in the Wednesday night tradition of the motherplucker. My life (and my physique) was changed when the daily specials at Pluckers came into my life.

This particular Sunday, I braved the rain with my fearless companion for the evening, Jeff. We sat and began to contemplate which of the drink specials we would take advantage of first. I chose the bloody mary to ease in to the night (bad choice, it was incredibly thin and didn’t have any spice) and Jeff went for a Crown on the rocks (a mere $4 for a delightful helping).

Since shots were only $2, we decided we had to partake and chose of the twenty-odd shots on the list. We went for Girl Scout Cookies – delight. The shots and drinks come with quite a kick to wash down the brilliantly fried food they offer.

Since Pluckers is open late, expect to be entertained by the other patrons and the interesting wait staff. Sadly, my waitress screwed up my order and the service was somewhat slow, so filled up on french fries and vodka (not a bad night).

Contribution from my guest reviewer, Jeff: there is an abundance of large TVs and it’s a great place to watch a game (or three). And the motherplucker … is 34 oz.

Hurricane Grill (CLOSED)

Wednesdays are the best days for a happy hour. It’s hump day, the day where you realize you still have two more whole days of work until the weekend. For me on Wednesday, the happy hour to look forward to was at Hurricane Grill.

Walking in the door, a rush of all of the fun nights spent there listening to the live music and playing Big Buck Hunter entered my mind. Snapped back to the present, I joined my party and ordered a $2 well vodka water.

The strong drinks encouraged conversation and a good time. Our waiter, John, was a blast and cracked jokes to entertain. Dinner was ordered and we all agreed that, while it tasted good, all three meals were overpriced.

Overall, a great evening. Try it on a Wednesday for a night out — you won’t regret it (though you may regret some decisions made after having strong drinks!).

The Hully and Mo Re-review

I’m at Hully and Mo and … I’m feeling the strength of these drinks.
It’s ladies night and the feeling is certainly right (drinks are half off on Thursday for ladies!). This place will be a repeat offender.

Penne Pomodoro

Another Sunday, another brunch … and Penne Pomodoro’s rivals the best of them. $1 Bloody Marys, bellinis, and mimosas start any Sunday Funday off the right way!

Many weekend mornings I hear the perverbial siren call of the Bloody Marys at P.P. and never regret answering that call — at least not until I’m immobile from the “fun” at 3 p.m. The strength of the drinks lures me back time after time even though I don’t like Italian food (which I feel says a lot!). If you get the mimosa they will actually bring the bottle of champagne to your table to refill; you usually end up with a glass of champagne with just a touch of orange juice by the end of the meal. The bellinis are delightful frozen masterpieces that cause brain freezes from drinking too heartily.

Sadly, the service isn’t great unless you can find a way to get the older gentleman with the glasses as your waiter (I had to get up to get my own water this past week). The wait staff for the most part is nice, and I always seem to be jealous of whatever adorable outfit the girl at the front is wearing.

Basically, P.P. holds a special place in my heart … especially since it’s close enough for me to walk home after the copious strong and cheap drinks!

Keyed up with the promise of all-you-can-eat sushi for a mere Jackson, our group of five marched into Gui with high expectations. Martinis, mixed drinks, and rolls were ordered as we surveyed the clientèle. The usual Uptown beautiful people were in attendance sipping their cocktails and bumbling with their chopsticks.

Round two of rolls and drinks were ordered and the snappy service continued. The overall favorites of the 12 rolls our table ordered were the Eel, Crunch, and Spider rolls; the favorite drink was the shot – sake, Goose, and some other yummy nectar with a celery garnish. (Yes, shots on a Tuesday!) Our group followed the rules (pictured below) and had a great time.

While Gui does a quite a few things right, one thing they have a slight problem with is matching the prices on the website to the prices on the menu. Call before you go so when you look at your bill and see double, you’ll know it’s from the strong drinks!

Scene 1: A bedroom.
{Light up as sun shines through a curtained window. Zoom in on clock beside bed; 11am on Sunday. Pan to reveal a hungover Susie waking up. Dazed, she looks around her room, fluffs her pillow, and initiates Operation: Brunch. Her iPhone clicks along as texts are sent and a destination chosen. She gets out of bed and dresses.}

Scene 2: Hully and Mo.
The large, heavy doors with hockey stick handles set the mood of a rugged sports bar. Inside, plush booths and a shiny bar give it a relaxed, chic feel and make a hangover brunch at the brainchild of Mike Modano and Brett Hull ideal. This particular day a Rangers game was on and the multiple flat screen TVs gave everyone in the party an unobstructed view.

The multiple spicy (and pleasantly potent) bloody marys and bottomless mimosas washed down our breakfast/brunch/lunch choices perfectly while lubricating the conversation. While I think we scared our waitress a little, she served us with a smile and took our jokes with a grain of salt and never let our drinks touch the bottom.

Overall, their patio is a great place to spend a Sunday brunch (even if it was empty) or have a drink before walking across the street to GingerMan. What more could a man want from a sports bar more than good food, good drinks, plenty of TVs, and cute girls? … I’d say not much.
